Baron Hylton

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baron Hylton of Hylton in the County Palatine of Durham and of Petersfield in the County of Southampton, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1866 for the Conservative politician Sir William Joliffe, 1st Baronet. He had already been created a Baronet, of Merstham in the County of Surrey, in 1821. Through his father's mother, the 1st Baron was co-heir of the original Barony of Hylton, a title created by writ in 1295, which had been in abeyance since the death of the 18th Baron in 1746.

The 1st Baron's second son, the 2nd Baron, represented Wells in Parliament as a Conservative. His son, the 3rd Baron, also represented Wells in the House of Commons as a Conservative and after entering the House of Lords notably served as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard from 1918 to 1924. His son, the 4th Baron, was Lord Lieutenant of Somerset from 1949 to 1964. The present holder of the Barony is the latter's eldest son, the 5th Baron. He is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who remain in the House of Lords after the House of Lords Act of 1999. Lord Hylton sits as a cross-bencher.
