Baron Farnham

The title of Baron Farnham, of Farnham in the County of Cavan, was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1756 for John Maxwell, who had previously represented County Cavan in the Irish House of Commons. His son, the 2nd Baron, was created Viscount Farnham (1760) and Earl of Farnham (1763) in the Peerage of Ireland, but these titles became extinct upon his death in 1779. His brother and successor, the 3rd Baron, was again created Viscount Farnham (1781) and Earl of Farnham (1785) in the Peerage of Ireland, but these titles again became extinct upon the death of his son, the 2nd Earl of this creation, in 1823.

The present holder of the Barony is also the holder of the Baronetcy of Calderwood, created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in 1627. This title was inherited from a distant relative in 1885 by the 9th Baron.

As of 30 June 2006, the present holder of the Barony has not successfully proven his succession to the Baronetcy and is therefore not on the Official Roll of the Baronetage. However, the case is under review by the Registrar of the Baronetage (for more information follow this link).
