Baron Clinton

The title Baron Clinton is a barony by writ in the Peerage of England, created in 1298 for John de Clinton. The 9th Baron was created Earl of Lincoln in 1572, and the Barony of Clinton was held by the Earls of Lincoln until it fell into abeyance on the death of the 5th Earl (and 13th Baron) in 1692. In 1721 it was called out of abeyance in favour of Hugh Fortescue, who in 1749 was created Baron Fortescue, of Castlehill in the County of Devon, and Earl Clinton. On his death the Barony of Fortescue was inherited, according to a special remainder in the letters patent, by his half-brother Matthew Fortescue (from whom the Earls Fortescue descend), whilst the Earldom became extinct. The Barony of Clinton was inherited by a female cousin.
