There have been three creations of the title Baron Carleton. The first was created in 1626, in the Peerage of England for Sir Dudley Carleton, who was later created Viscount Dorchester in 1628. Both titles became extinct upon his death in 1632. The second was created in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1714 for the politician, Henry Boyle. That title became extinct upon his death in 1725. The last creation of the title was in 1786, again in the Peerage of Great Britain, for Richard Boyle, 2nd Earl of Shannon and the barony and earldom have remained united since.
