Baron Barnard

Baron Barnard, of Barnard Castle in the Bishoprick of Durham, is a title in the Peerage of England. It was created in 1698 for Sir Christopher Vane, who had previously served as a Member of Parliament for County Durham and Boroughbridge. Vane was the son of Sir Henry Vane the Younger and grandson of Sir Henry Vane the Elder. In 1754 his grandson, the third Baron, was created Viscount Barnard, of Barnard Castle in the County of Durham, and Earl of Darlington, in the County of Durham. The latter's grandson, the third Earl, was made Marquess of Cleveland in 1827 and Baron Raby, of Raby Castle in the County of Durham, and Duke of Cleveland in 1831. However, all the titles except the Barony of Barnard became extinct in 1891 on the death of his son, the fourth Duke. The title of Baron Barnard was inherited, according to a decision by the Committee for Privileges in the House of Lords, by the late Duke's kinsman Henry de Vere Vane, who became the ninth Baron. He was the great-great-grandson of Hon. Morgan Vane, younger son of the second Baron. The ninth Baron's nephew, William Vane, was created Baron Inglewood in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1964. Another member of the Vane family was Hon. William Vane, who was created Viscount Vane in the Peerage of Ireland in 1720. He was the younger son of the first Baron Barnard.
The family seat is Raby Castle, near Staindrop, County Durham.
