Barnes railway station is in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, in south London, and is in Travelcard Zone 3. The station, and all trains serving it, is operated by South West Trains.
The station, seven miles from Waterloo, was opened on 27 July 1846, when the line to Richmond was built. When the first section of the Hounslow Loop Line was opened on 22 August 1849, Barnes became a junction station. On the London side of the station there are four tracks; one pair turns off along the Loop Line here.
There are four platform faces: the central island serves the Up and Down through lines to Richmond; Loop Line trains use the outer platforms. Station buildings are on the Up side, situated on Rocks Lane above the station platforms.
The typical off-peak service from the station is:
- 14tph (trains per hour) to London Waterloo, of which:
- 8 run direct via Clapham Junction
- 2 run via Richmond, Kingston and Wimbledon
- 4 run via the Hounslow loop (2tph in each direction)
- 2tph to Weybridge
