Barncluith, Hamilton
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barncluith is an area of Hamilton, Scotland. Barncluith forms the south-eastern part of town, between the town centre and the Avon Water. It lies to either side of the A72, which leads out of Hamilton to Larkhill and the Clyde Valley.
Barncluith formerly had its own school, Barncluith Primary School, but this was closed down in the 1990s. The school building lies just beyond the existing dual carriageway which separates Barncluith from the town centre. The Rev. John Brown, father of Gordon Brown MP, Chancellor of The Exchequer 1997 to present, was the minister of St. John's church, and formerly lived in the manse on Barncluith Road [citation needed].
Barncluith House is an impressive stone tower house built around 1538, but heavily restored. Now a private house, it has summer houses within terraced gardens which run down to the Avon Water.
