Barbie in the Nutcracker is a direct-to-video Barbie movie that is an adaptation of the Nutcracker ballet story.

[edit] Plot

Kelly, Barbie's sister, does not have confidence in her ballet dancing. To cheer her up, Barbie tells her the story of the Nutcracker.

Clara (played by Barbie) lives with her stern Grandfather Drosselmeyer and younger brother, Tommy. On Christmas Eve, the family receives a surprise visit from the vivacious Aunt Drosselmeyer, who comes bearing gifts for her niece and nephew. Clara receives a Nutcracker, but Tommy, jealous that Clara got such a strange gift, tries to take it away and breaks it.

Clara manages to fix the nutcracker and falls asleep near the Christmas tree. She awakes to see her Nutcracker fighting the Mouse King and his mouse army. When Clara tries to help, the Mouse King shrinks her down to his size, though even that isn't enough to defeat the Nutcracker and Clara. He retreats for now.

The Nutcracker reveals that he has been enchanted and seeks to find the Sugarplum Princess, the only person who can stop the Mouse King from taking over his world. With some advice from the wise owl of the grandfather clock, he suggests that Clara comes with him, since the Sugarplum Princess is probably the only one who can make Clara her original size again.

The two journey into the Land of Sweets, where the locals reveal that the rightful heir to the throne, Prince Eric, has gone missing in the wake of the Mouse King's attempts to conquer the world. Clara quickly figures out that her Nutcracker is the missing prince and he reveals that his irresponsibility is the reason why he was enchanted by the Mouse King in the first place. While he knows he must take responsibility for his past actions and accepts the blame his disgruntled subjects unwittingly present to him, he hopes to redeem himself by finding the mythical Sugarplum Princess and making things right again.

Joined by the arrogant Major Mint and Captain Candy, a soldier loyal to Prince Eric, the group sets out to find the Princess and defeat the Mouse King, who is watching and attempting to sabotage them along the way. When Clara is separated from the group, who are all captured by the Mouse King, she alone must venture to the Mouse King's palace to free her friends and defeat the Mouse King.

After being freed, the Nutcracker fights a final battle with the Mouse King. Throughout the battle, it seems that the Mouse King was gaining the advantage; but at the last minute, Clara leaps in between them. The Mouse King then tries to turn Clara smaller, but the Nutcracker uses his sword to defect the Mouse King's magic back to the Mouse King himself. The Mouse King shrinks into the size of a real mouse and flees into the sewers. Major Mint jokingly replies that the Mouse King is back to where he 'belongs'.

Once the Mouse King is defeated. Clara is revealed to be the Sugarplum Princess, and the Nutcracker, the Nutcracker's enchantment breaks and he returns to his true form. He apologies to his subjects for his actions and asks them to give him a second chance, which they readily do now that they have seen the kindness, courage, and selflessness he demonstrated as the Nutcracker.

Clara and Prince Eric, who have fallen in love with one another, dance as the citizens of the Land of Sweets celebrate their victory. However, the Mouse King, although shrunken, is determined to get his revenge at Clara for ruining him. He snatches Clara's locket off from her and opens it-earlier in the film, the wise owl from the grandfather clock had said that the locket is the way to send Clara back home. The Mouse King doesn't enjoy his revenge for long, though, as a snowball(created by a Snow Fairy and thrown by Peppermint Girl, an additional character) is thrown at his ride, Pimm the Bat, knocking him out cold and causing both him and the Mouse King to fell straight to the ground, presumably to their deaths. Clara fades away... and wakes up in the living room where she fell asleep. Disappointed that her adventure was a dream, she greets her grandfather and Aunt Drosselmeyer, who has brought the son of a friend to visit. Clara is surprised and happy to see the young man is actually Eric and the couple happily finish their dance. Note: the lady who voices Aunt Drosselmeyer Kathleen Barr also voices the wise owl; coincidence?

Kelly, impressed with the courage and determination of Clara a.k.a. the Sugarplum Princess, decides to try again and she and Barbie finish their own dance.
