Location of Barbian in Italy

Barbian (German) or Barbiano (Italian) is a comune (municipality) in the South Tyrol in the Italian region Trentino-South Tyrol, located about 70 km northeast of Trento and about 15 km northeast of Bolzano. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 1,538 and an area of 24.4 km².[1]

Barbian-Barbiano borders the following municipalities: Kastelruth, Lajen, Waidbruck, Ritten, and Villanders.

The city is mentioned for the first time in 994 as Parpian, the name deriving probably from the Latin person mane Barbius[2].

It is the native city of the famous Italian condottiero Alberico da Barbiano.
