Barbara Thomas

The Hon. Barbara Thomas (Lady Judge) is Chair of the UK Atomic Energy Authority and of the Governing Body of the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Born Barbara S. Thomas, she was educated at the University of Pennsylvania (Bachelor of Arts) and New York University School of Law (Juris Doctor cum laude, coming second in a class of 324 candidates and winning nineteen prizes).

As a lawyer she worked in the areas of securities and orporations law and in 1978 she was appointed a partner in Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays, and Handler. In 1980 she was appointed by Jimmy Carter to be a member of the US Securities and Exchange Commission and she served until 1983 (the youngest person, and only the second woman, to serve on the Commission). She then moved to Hong Kong to become a board member of the British merchant bank Samuel Montagu & Co. In 1993 she moved to the United Kingdom to become an executive director of News International.

She has been a member of the board of the UK Atomic Energy Authority since September 2002 and in July 2004 she became its Chair.

As well as chairing the Governing Body of the School of Oriental and African Studies she is a member of the International Board of Overseers of Sabancı University (Istanbul), the Executive Board for Europe, Africa, and the Middle East of Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania), and the Board of Governors of the Lauder Institute of International Management. She is a trustee of the Royal Academy and the Wallace Collection, a member of the Agricultural Forum, and a governor of the Ditchley Foundation.

She is Chair of Private Equity Investor, Chair of the Professional Standards Advisory Board of the Institute of Directors, Deputy Chair of the Financial Reporting Council (where she is also a member of the Nominations, Remuneration, and Audit Committees), and Deputy Chairman of Friends Provident. She is a director of BT Consulting and Dynamic Solutions Group Venture Capital and a non-executive director of PA Consulting Group, Quintain Estates and Development and Quintain Services, Hardy Underwriting Group, Private Equity International, Portmeirion Group, Victory Corporation, and Planet Group. She is a non-executive member of the Department for Constitutional Affairs and an independent member of the Performance Monitoring Committee of the Department of Trade and Industry. She is an adviser to Hill & Associates, Millennium Associates, Cross Border Enterprises, and London Capital Club.

She is a dual citizen of the United States of America and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
