Barbara Loden was born on July 8, 1932 in Marion, North Carolina, USA. She died of cancer on September 5, 1980 in New York City. Loden was a notable film and stage actress and film director. At the time of her death, she was married to the director Elia Kazan. She was most famous for her role as the sister of Warren Beatty in Kazan's film, Splendor in the Grass (1961) and for portraying the fictionalized Marilyn Monroe in Kazan's stage production of After the Fall, written by Arthur Miller.
In 1971, she wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the critically well-received independent film, Wanda, one of the very few theatrically released American dramatic films directed by a woman at that time.
Loden was serious about directing and had plans in development for more features before her life was cut short by cancer.
