Bangalore Mountaineering Club

Bustling schedules, neck-deep deadlines, fast-track lifestyles, long work hours is also an integral part of the club. Yet founded, closely nurtured and carefully groomed, Neeraj Malve, can carry his august chest boasting of over 1000 members. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give to you BMC or Bangalore Mountaineering Club, an adventure sport, non-profit, non-government organization that truly deserves a standing ovation.

BMC is founded on May 27, 2004 and has ever since been conducting weekend programs of over 100 treks, adventure sport events, nature trails and the likes. BMC has scaled the entire national landscape from Leh to Niligiris. However, its forte rests in the South. Kumara Parvata, Kodaikanal, Niligiris, Western Ghats, Moyar, Bandipur, Wyanad and the Konkan range remains our supreme and undisputed stronghold. Other events include parasailing, wall and rock climbing, bouldering, white-water rafting, coracling, river crossing, etc. One can find fervent adventure enthusiasts of all age groups (between 6-65), from diverse nationalities, both men and women and from all walks of life registering online (www.bmcindia.org [1]) to receive updates, program schedules and posting travelogues of their favorite events. It also serves as a platform/forum for discussion and thoughtful contributions, not to forget the inexhaustible gallery of stunning pictures from budding lensmen. The website is worth more than just a visit. Precise planning, organizing, executing and controlling account for the success of every event conducted (no.of participants per trek are range between 10 and 50). Scouting surveys and preliminary recordings are essentially carried out before an amateur group participates in the trek. Precautionary and safety measures, being fully aware of the nature of the sport, are of primary importance and include professionally recommended equipment, certified experts and advanced emergency medical aid.

Every event is actively supported by a team of ardent, certified mountaineers and like-minded enthusiasts who carry out bestowed responsibilities. If you have an appetite for escapade tales, you will get more than a mouthful to satiate yourself with the team. The team, better known as Team BMC, consists of old-school Neeraj, Vikram, Roopa and Amit while the new-school members are Apun, Priya, Pradeep and Tarsh. Nevertheless, strict guidelines govern the norm of behavior and cooperation of participants during an event. BMC just does not have a clean slate of untoward incidents, but also has successfully built a warm and friendly rapport with patrons, forest authorities and related personnel who also vouch for it.

Apart from all of the above, BMC also undertakes activities that involve social causes like a Trek to Clean Program at Muthathi/Bheemeshwari. Along the river bed of Bheemeshwari plastic, thrash and broken glass are littered in several kilotons out of ignorance and irresponsibility. The place which was once an attractive destination for tourists now has its fate between the devil and the deep sea being between the villagers and forest officials who have caused more harm than good, time after time. BMC overran the place by cleaning it up, collecting all the litter, putting up both vernacular and English signboards, dustbins and even lobbying and talking with officials and villagers alike.
