Bangalore International Airport (IATA: BLRICAO: VOBG) is a 4,050 acre international airport that is being built to service the city of Bangalore, India. The airport is located in Devanahalli, which is 30 km from the city. Construction of the airport began in July 2005, after a decade long postponement. It is expected to be completed and operational by April 2, 2008. It will then take all the commercial flights that are currently operating out of the HAL Airport. There is a proposal that this airport shall be named after the founder of Bangalore "Nadaprabhu Sri.Kempe Gowda".

[edit] Construction

BIAL is working on a redesign of the Bangalore International Airport project. BIAL was originally planned to accommodate 3.5 million passengers a year, but this has now been redesigned to handle 11 million passengers. The redesign will see an increase in the size of the terminal, number of aircraft stands, new taxiway layouts and supporting infrastructure. However, the redesign will be incorporated into the present project schedule as BIAL is committed to opening the new Bangalore International Airport in April 2008.

A plan is also being processed for a direct Rail Service from Bangalore Cantonement Railway Station to the Basement Rail terminal at the New International Airport. Access on the National Highway is being widenend to a six lane expressway, with a 3 feet boundary wall, though construction is moving extremely slowly.

As of August 2006, a brand new expressway is expected to connect the International Airport to the City's Ring Road. The Expressway will begin after the Hebbal Flyover on the [Ring Road]. This is expected to be a tolled road. Land Acquisition for the road is expected to be complete by December 2006.

The Union Government has recently approved the proposed amendment to the concession agreement of Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to enable the joint venture company to redesign the initial phase of the project to cater to 8.4 million passengers by 2010 as against the earlier target of 2020.

The amendment will allow the firm to re-design the airport under construction at Devanahalli, near Bangalore. It was felt that the facilities in the initial phase of the project would be grossly inadequate at the time of opening of the airport and hence the need to re-design was recognised.
