Bananal Island
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bananal Island (Portuguese: Ilha do Bananal) is a large island in the Araguaia River, state of Tocantins in Brazil. The island is formed when the river divides in a very flat area into a major stream to the east and a minor stream to the west.
Bananal is the largest river island in the world being 350 km long and 55 km wide. At 20,000 km², it is twice the size of Lebanon or Jamaica.
Bananal is part of a national park and is a very popular destination for ecotourism. There are no roads on the island so the only transport is by boat.
In the last 50 years the native inhabitants of the island, of the Karajá tribe, have been reduced to a few hundreds. They are now vastly outnumbered by Brazilians of non-Indian descent.
