The term "banana belt" is a typical informal geographic term used to describe a relatively small region in an area (such as a state, a part of a state, a mountain range, etc.) which enjoys warmer weather conditions than the region as a whole, especially in the wintertime. Examples: "Rapid City is located in the banana belt of the Black Hills." and "Yukon is located in the banana belt of Yukon Territory." Some people in the upper midwest refer to the more southerly portions of the region, such as Illinois, Iowa, and southern Wisconsin as the "banana belt" since this area is often warmer with less snow than areas only a relatively short distance north.
