[edit] Plot synopsis

The movie focuses on Matt Stifler, the younger brother of Steve Stifler from the previous American Pie films. Matt is eager to enter the family business of making pornographic films, so he can prove to his older brother that he is "up to the standards of the Stifmeister." Stifler and his friends play a prank on the band students during the seniors' graduation ceremony by spraying pepper spray on the mouthpieces of the band's instruments. He also happens to find a long tubular-shaped object with the word "Picardo" written on it, which he assumes to be a vibrator. Matt narrowly escapes getting caught but realizes the pepper spray can discharged on his genitals. The band members begin to play "Pomp and Circumstance," only to become too irritated by the pepper spray to continue. During the commotion, one of the students trips and pulls down the back curtain, revealing Stifler dousing his boxers with water from a fountain. Elyse Houston, the band conductor, stands shocked.

Elyse demands that Stifler be punished for ruining their performance, stating that he always gets away with his pranks because he is the school's star football player. The school's guidance counselor Chuck Sherman ("The Sherminator") decides that a worthwhile punishment would be for Stifler to attend band camp, in the hopes that he would make friends with the "bandies" and not follow in the footsteps of his much-hated brother. While talking to his friends, Matt tells them of how Steve's friend Jim hooked up with a "nympho from band camp" who said that all the band members do at camp is have sex. Matt refers to Elyse as a "nympho" because she was the owner of the object that he assumed to be a vibrator. Matt then gets the idea to secretly videotape the "bandies" in action and sell the video in hopes of joining Steve in the "family business". Matt buys a large and expensive assortment of hidden cameras and video equipment and has it rush-shipped.

As Matt records the various happenings at the camp, he gradually becomes friends with some of the band members from his school and even falls in love with Elyse, who is revealed to have been a friend of Matt's in 8th grade but had a falling out after Matt started hanging around with Steve and his friends and acting like "The Stifmeister". Matt is eventually caught with his movies, and his once-friends want nothing more to do with him.

After talking with Mr. Levenstein, head of the band camp, Matt learns that the people that Steve thought were his friends really did not like him very much. Levenstein believes that people want to like Matt, but he makes it impossible by trying to be like his brother. This is confirmed when Matt later asks Sherman, "Did everyone really hate my brother?" to which he responds with a rather sad nod.

Matt comes to realize that his brother is not as great or cool as he once thought and that following in his footsteps is not a good idea, so he deletes all the videos he recorded at band camp. He even enlists the help of the band to help Elyse get the band scholarship that Stifler accidentally made her lose in the final days of band camp. This plan becomes a success, and Elyse finally forgives Matt, and the two eventually have sex (during the final credits). Elyse reveals what the "Picardo" was- the case of her piccolo flute, which she says uses "to get on with" or something to that effect. Although it was not actually a vibrator, this is obviously a reference to Michelle Flaherty's sexual explorations with her flute as famously mentioned in American Pie.

[edit] Trivia

  • The oboe with which Matt engages himself is not an actual oboe but an English horn (an instrument in the oboe family).
  • Matt reads the poster about proper embouchure formation (where the poster features an actual oboe), but he does not use proper embouchure formation when he wraps his lips around the horn. It should not have been possible for him to make sound with the horn in the scene.
  • Tad Hilgenbrink (Matt) really bared it all in the scene where he undresses in front of the girls while playing the trivia game. He didn't inform the girls in advance, who were expecting him to keep his privates covered somehow, so their reaction is quite genuine.
  • The robot created by Ernie in the story was in real life created by a team of three Chinese engineers (according to the end credits).
