[edit] Warning

Please stop uploading images without source and copyright information. Also, please do not upload images taken from other websites - in most cases these are copyright violations. Thanks. --Hetar 07:10, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Their "ok" is insufficient for use on Wikipedia. In order for them to be used here, they either need to have a detailed fair use rationale, or be released under a free license, so that anyone can modify them in any way and for any reason (including for commercial purposes). Images without this information will eventually be deleted. --Hetar 07:14, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:Steeldogs-helmet.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Steeldogs-helmet.gif. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fritz Saalfeld (Talk) 14:10, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A Christmas Story

You wrote: Mavarin... let's calm down a little bit on the removing/reallignment of information on A Christmas Story. Just waltzing through and removing other's additions with no mention of why is considered extremely rude. This isn't your article... it's our article. Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bamassippi (talk • contribs) 14:37, 26 November 2006 (MST.

First of all, I'm sorry you're upset. It is certainly not my intention to ruin your work, or the article. Quite the contrary: I'm trying to preserve as much of it as I can and still conform to Wikipedia guidelines. The fact is that many articles have had trivia sections added and then deleted several times, per WP:AVTRIV. Many Wikipdians, generally those with a "deletionist" orientation, don't want any trivia in articles at all. When they see a trivia section, they will often just delete the whole thing, or just save one or two items and merge them in elsewhere. See, for example, Talk:A_Christmas_Story#Trivia_to_popular_culture.3F, in which I responded the last time someone deleted the trivia section. See also Talk:Back to the Future for more discussion of the same problem. Trust me, there are lots of editors out there who are much tougher on trivia sections than I am. I was trying to forestall their deletion of your material by putting it in appropriate sections, per Wikipedia guidelines.
Second, I put an edit summary on everything I did, explaining each move. I specifically said, "Trivia stuff needs to be merged into appropriate sections - e.g. settings.)" This is not something I'm doing to be mean to you; it's the generally accepted guideline, although I did not cite that at the time. Still, the problem had just been mentioned on the talk page, so I didn't exactly operate in an informational vacuum.
Third, some of your trivia repeated information already stated elsewhere. Please read through an article before adding the same info again. This was also mentioned in my edit summaries.
Fourth, many Wikipedians make a big deal of citing reliable sources for pretty much every fact in an article, particularly everything that can't be derived just from looking at a television screen. This, too, is a well-established and generally accepted Wikipedia guideline. Although there are lots of articles that do not do a good job of this, there are also lots and lots of Wikipedians who want anything and everything to have citations. None of your material has citations, and it's not straight from watching the movie, either. The bar is also set fairly high for what a reliable source is: no blogs, no fan forums. I don't always agree with that standard, but that's what it is.
Fifth: my moves of images were to have them illustrate appropriate blocks of text. Perhaps the exact placement can be improved, but there's a reason for this beyond just keeping things organized. A screen shot is a "fair use" image, and requires something called a "fair use rationale" for using it. Basically, as I understand it, you can't have lots of these in any one article, and each one needs to have a good reason for being there, and illustrate something specific.
I hope you will find this helpful, and not shoot the messenger. Like you, I'm just trying to make the article as good as it can be - but I'm trying to follow Wikipedia guidelines in doing so. Have a great day, and happy editing! Oh, and please sign your comments on talk pages with four tildes. Thanks! Karen | Talk | contribs 22:32, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Jalin-Wood.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Jalin-Wood.gif. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 15:40, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Walker High School (Jasper, Alabama)

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Walker High School (Jasper, Alabama), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at Talk:Walker High School (Jasper, Alabama). You may remove the deletion notice, and the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. --Slowking Man 04:38, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:WhslogoSHIELD.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:WhslogoSHIELD.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}. If you have not already done so, please also include the source of the image. In many cases this will be the website where you found it.

Please specify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Slowking Man 04:38, 16 December 2006 (UTC)
