Bamum language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bamun language is sometimes called the Bamum or Mum language. It is one of the Benue-Congo languages of Cameroon and it has approximately 215,000 speakers. The language is particularly well-known for the writing system developed by Sultan Njoya for it beginning around 1895; this went through several versions, starting out as an ideographic system and eventually becoming a syllabary. However, this fell out of use after the French closed Sultan Njoya's school. Cameroonian guitarist Claude Ndam is a native Bamun speaker and uses the language in some of his music.
