A Balverine is a werewolf-like creature in the video game Fable for Xbox and PC, and seen as the game's unofficial mascot. They are found in the region of Dark Wood and various other places. Like the regular werewolves, Balverines are weak against silver, and are most easilly defeated when the player has augmented his or her weapon with a silver augmentation.

[edit] Origins

According to the Oracle in The Lost Chapters, the Balverine curse originates with an ancient creature known as the Balvorn. For most of Albion's history, no human being survived a Balvorn attack. When one finally did, however, that person found themselves forced to change into a wolf-like creature. Balvorns no longer exist, but the Balverine curse continues.

[edit] Other Balverines

[edit] White Balverines

White Balverines are stronger and taller than their counterparts. Their unique look comes from their victims, who were strong enough (mentally or magically) to delay the inevitable transformation into a Balverine. In Fable, it is implied that those that hunt Balverines as a profession, once bitten, will eventually transform into this form of Balverine.

[edit] Frost Balverine

In Fable: The Lost Chapters, the Hero encounters another species of Balverine, called the Frost Balverine. These are stronger than normal Balverines, yet weaker than the White Balverine. There is no in-game origins behind this breed, but simple evolution is likely the reason.
