Balkash

This article is about the city in Kazakhstan. For the lake of the same name, see Lake Balkash.

Balkash is a city in Kazakhstan located on the north shore of Lake Balkash. In 1989, its population was 86,609. It was initially founded in 1929 with the name of Bertys, and was renamed Balkash in 1936. It is known for its fish processing and copper smelting.
