Balfour, British Columbia

Balfour is an unincorporated community in British Columbia, located c.30 km northeast of the city of Nelson and located at the juncture of Kootenay Lake with its West Arm. It is the location of a vehicle and rail ferry crossing the main arm of the lake; the rail ferry is part of the southern mainline of the Canadian Pacific Railway and lands at Kootenay Bay, where tracks continue south to Creston and east from there to Cranbrook and the Crowsnest Pass.
Balfour, also known as Balfour Bay, was once the location of one of the Canadian Pacific's grand railway hotels, the Balfour Hotel (linked image is c.1918).
