I have been editing the article on the Edinburgh Fringe. The objective has been to extend it: (a) to provide a bit more historical context; (b) to bring in the role played by genres other than comedy, particularly drama; (c) and to generally add additional material where I thought appropriate.

I made changes to the Introduction, History and Legacy sections before this year's festival commenced. I have waited until this year's festival has finished to add changes to the Fringe Today and External Links sections (added on 1st Sept 2006). Here is a summary of these recent changes:

Fringe Today

  • replaced 2005 stats with those for 2006
  • use of technology ... mentioned first computerised booking system ... arranged the various entries on the use of technology into a bulleted list
  • high profile shows ... attempted to generalise this - it was a bit too orientated towards the Guy Masterson shows
  • criticism - fairly major reworking ... more on Fringe Society philosophy .. more on issue of quality of arts .. slight changes to para on question of too much comedy ... reworked and expanded references to "super venues" (removed reference to end of sponsorship by Orange of Assembly as it does not seem greatly relevant in the context of any general debate on corporate sponsorship) ... removed citation re commercial emphasis - this relates to the council and its rules and regulations wrt Street Theatre / Busking, ie it does not relate to the Fringe ... added short para on issues of taste .. minor changes to para on ticket prices
  • reviews and awards ... expanded on places where reviews can be found though I removed what I thought was an overt advert for ThreeWeeks ... added information on awards

External links

Removed festonline.co.uk which appears to have no relevance to the Fringe ... added links to other places where news, previews and reviews can be found ... as there are now quite a lot of links I have structured them into 3 groups: general links (that have relevance all year round); places to find previews & reviews (most relevant in July and August, ie around festival time); links to UK national press for previews and reviews (again relevant in July and August).

Further Changes implemented on 16th September 2006 ...

Venues

Revamped. Removed ever-growing selected list of venues and replaced with a general discussion on the history of venues and the sorts of places that are used as venues.

Fringe Legacy

Removed ever-growing list of sometimes questionable comedians that have been "discovered" in recent years. Replaced with a sentence that mentions some better known figures (usually those whose careers have taken off after they have won the Perrier).
