Alfred and Judy are two unusually low 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotives built by W.G. Bagnall. They were built for shunting duties at the Port of Par where they shunted china clay wagons between Par docks and the Paddington-Penzance line. Between these locations a low bridge crossed the tracks which meant the locomotives had to be built to an extremely low loading gauge. The locomotives' cabs have a very low floor and roof, allowing an unusually low overall height for a standard gauge locomotive.

Judy was built in 1936 and withdrawn from service in 1969. Alfred was built to the same design in 1953 to replace a vertical boilered Sentinel locomotive and was withdrawn in 1978.

Alfred was painted yellow, Judy green.

[edit] Preservation

These locomotives have been preserved at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway. Alfred and Judy can be seen running under the guise as "Bill" and "Ben" for "Day Out with Thomas" events.

[edit] In fiction

Alfred and Judy form the basis of Bill and Ben, two characters from The Railway Series by Rev.W.Awdry. Both characters have also featured in the spin-off Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends TV Series.
