Baginton

Baginton is a village and civil parish in the Warwick district of Warwickshire, England. The parish lies just south of Coventry and on the border with the Coventry Metropolitan Borough (formerly a West Midlands boundary) and the village itself is about 5 km (3 miles) south of Coventry City Centre and about 11 km (7 miles) north of Leamington Spa. The road from Baginton to South Coventry goes over the River Sowe near to an old mill.
The Doomsday book records that in the 11th century Baginton consisted of 15 households and a mill. According to the 2001 census Baginton had a population of 801.
The Church of St John the Baptist is situated in the old part of Baginton. A scenic footpath starts near to the church and goes to Stoneleigh.

[edit] Lunt Fort
The remains of the ancient Roman Lunt Fort have been found in Baginton on the south side of the village. Parts of the fort were reconstructed in the 1970's and it is popular for school visits. The Lunt Fort has activity days during the summer.
[edit] Baginton Castle and Fish Ponds
Baginton Castle and Fish Ponds are Ancient Scheduled Monuments (Numbers: 21540-1 and 21540-2) and trespass on them without permission is illegal. The area has been fenced off recently in 2006 (approx date); the ruins and former Fish Ponds can can be viewed by arrangement with a local farmer who owns the land. The ruin that can be seen is of a late fourteenth-century house, but it is not well known due to its location in an area of woodland on private land. If Baginton Castle did exist prior to this house, there are no sign of its ruins.
[edit] The Baginton oak tree
Baginton is the site of a very old and well known oak tree which is often called the Baginton oak. It is about 300 - 350 years old and is thought to be one of the oldest trees in Warwickshire. A near by public house is called "The Oak".
[edit] Coventry Airport
Baginton is home to the gradually expanding Coventry Airport, which lies just east of the village. The Midland Air Museum is situated next to the southern side of Coventry airport which goes along Rowley road.
