Bagalkot (ಬಾಗಲಕೋಟೆ in Kannada) is a town in the Indian state of Karnataka. Bagalkot is the district headquarters of the northern Bagalkot district of the state.

BAGALKOT - A TREASURE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE

Bagalkot is a district head quarters in North Karnataka, Sitiuated on the bank of the river Ghataprabha, snuggly sheltered in the lap of nature. This place has got a mythological and historical background. It is learnt from inscriptions that the old name for this town was Bagadige. A legend says that during ancient times this town was gifted to the Vajantries (Musicians) by Ravana the king of Lanka who ruled this part. Later, under successive dominions of Vijayanagar emperors, Peshwas, Hyderali of Mysore, Maratha rulers and finally Britishers in 1818 A.D. In 1865, Muncipality came in existence and civic amenities were provided to the residents of Bagalkot, Now, Bagalkot enjoys a unique reputation of being a cradle of Swamijis, Saints, Literary Luminaries, Educationalists, Scholars, Journalists, Patriots and Musicians. In recent years, this town has emerged as a powerful center of Industry, Commerce and Educational institutions. The world renowned piligrim places of Veerashaivas, Kudal Sangam, the sanctuary of lord Basaveshwara of twelveth century who was considered as the greatest social reformer, a scholar and who brought about revolutionary changes by serving the humanity. Shivayogimandir is the training center for swamijis and treasure house of veershaiva literature and wisdom. The historically famous places like Badami - Banashankari temple and world famous Menabasadi and Aihole and Pattadakal - glorifying temple architectural beauty and grandeur of chalukyas are within the distance of 45 Kms from Bagalkot. Eventhough, Bagalkot city is under the threat of submergence due to upper Krishna project, the construction of a new city, Navanagar, with the all modern amenities are in full swing.
