Bache & Co. was founded in 1879 in New York City as a stock brokerage and investment bank under the name Leopold Cahn & Co. In 1892 Jules S. Bache, an employee and relative of the proprietors, reorganized the company as J.S. Bache & Co. He built the company into one of the most successful and innovative brokerage houses in the United States.
Following the death of Jules Bache in 1944, a Bache family member took over the running of the business and the name was shortened to Bache & Co.
In 1981 the firm was acquired by the Prudential Insurance Company of America.
