B'Day is the second studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Beyoncé, released by Columbia Records on September 1, 2006 (see 2006 in music) outside North America, on September 4, 2006 worldwide (Beyoncé's twenty-fifth birthday, hence the title) and on September 5, 2006 in Canada and the United States. Beyonce confirmed in an interview on a Spanish television program that there will be a re-release that will feature a duet with Shakira.

[edit] History

[edit] Production and title

After wrapping up her role as Deena on the upcoming film Dreamgirls, Knowles had "bottled up so many things, so many emotions, so many ideas" that she decided to leave her vacation early to record the album in a timespan of two weeks, recording three songs a day. She did this without telling her father/manager (Mathew Knowles) or her record label. At that time Knowles had booked the whole Sony Studios, simultaneously recording with an "all-star team of producers", including Rodney Jerkins, Rich Harrison, Pharrell, Stargate, Cameron Wallace, Walter Milsap, and Swizz Beatz. Rapper T.I. also joined the sessions to record a verse for "Upgrade U", but like Lil Wayne he did not make the cut on B'Day.[2][3][4][5]

The track "Resentment" is a cover of a song originally recorded by Victoria Beckham. The track, which was also covered by Jazmine Sullivan in 2004, appeared on the The Real Beckhams DVD release as a bonus song. The track features altered lyrics (and thus a writing credit) for Knowles.

[edit] Chart success

The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with first week sales of 541,000 copies (224,000 more than her previous album Dangerously in Love), and at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, being a huge success. In the UK it peaked at number three, debut with 35,000 units sold. And has went to sell 200,000 units there. Its also sold 1.6 million copies in the U.S. and 2.5 million worlwide.

The first single off the album was "Deja Vu", a '70s funk-influenced uptempo classic Beyoncé beat, featuring her beau Jay-Z. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. "Ring the Alarm", the second single, peaked at number eleven in the Hot 100, and number three in the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "Irreplaceable" has rapidly climbed up the charts, and is number one on the Billboard Hot 100. It has become B'Day's most massive and successful hit becoming its first number-one in the U.S., topping both the digital, pop, and R&B charts on Billboard. What is rather unexpected is her second B'Day collaboration with Jay-Z, "Upgrade U", is climbing up the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, based solely on airplay. Its current peak position is fourteen.[6] The song has also peaked at number sixty-four on the Hot 100.

B'Day is nominated for five Grammy Awards including: "Best Female R&B Vocal Performance" for "Ring the Alarm", "Best R&B Song" for "Deja Vu", "Best Contemporary R&B Album", "Best Rap/Sung Collaboration" for "Deja Vu", and "Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical" for "Deja Vu" (Freemasons Club Mix - No Rap) (remixed by Russell Small and James Wiltshire).
