A group of B-17 bombers flying through dense flak.
Image taken from a russian web site at [1]. A much better version is available at Willard Reese's web site on the 457th Bomb Group in the picture archive: [2], linked at [3], where it is stated that the image is believed to have been taken over Merseburg, Germany (misspelled as "Merseberg"). It is unclear who took the image; credit is given to the photo collection of one Bernie Baines [4]. Evidently taken by a U.S. aviator, but whether that is a personal photo or taken "in the course of his duties" I cannot judge. If the latter, the image would indeed be in the public domain in the U.S. If the former, it might be still covered by copyright. Lupo 11:22, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
I would consider any picture taken during a flight mission qualifies as "in the course of his duties," so I'm tagging this as {{PD-USGov-Military-Air Force}}. howcheng {chat} 00:57, 16 February 2006 (UTC) {{PD}}
