Bărăgan Plain

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bărăgan Plain (Romanian: Câmpia Bărăganului) is a steppe plain in south-central Romania, part of the Romanian Plain. It is mostly a cereal-growing area.

[edit] Climate

The summers are hot and dry, the location where the highest temperature in Romania was recorded (44.5 °C, at Ion Sion) being located in this plain. The winters are cold, with a blizzard known as "crivăţ". This feature also gives its name, derived from Cuman, meaning "place where the bizzard is raging".

Due to its climate, it was the most inhospitable area in Romania and it was used as a depot for mass deportations by the Communist authorities during the 1950s.
