In 1890 the municipality was split in two when Børseskognen was separated as a discrete municipality. The split left Børsa with 2,300 inhabitants. On January 1, 1905 another split took place, creating the municipality of Geitastrand and leaving Børsa with a population of 1,420.
On January 1, 1965 Børsa was incorporated into Skaun along with Buvik. Before the merger Børsa had a population of 1,476.
