iAzotobacter
Scientific classification
Kingdom: Bacteria
Phylum: Proteobacteria
Class: Gamma Proteobacteria
Order: Pseudomonadales
Family: Pseudomonadaceae/Azotobacteraceae
Genus: Azotobacter
Species

A. vinelandii
A. chroococcum

Azotobacter are usually motile, oval, or spherical bacteria, form thick-walled cysts, and may produce large quantities of capsular slime. Beyond Azotobacter’s use as a model it has biotechnological applications. A couple examples are its use for alginate production and for nitrogen production in batch fermentations 1,2. Azotobacter are gram-negative bacteria.
