The Azerbaijan Democratic Party was founded by Jafar Pishevari as an Azerbaijan opposition party against the Pahlavi dynasty. It ruled the Soviet-backed Democratic Republic of South Azerbaijan from 1945 until 1946 with Pishevari as premier.
