Ayuntamiento
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ayuntamiento is a Spanish word that has several similar meanings:
- "City Hall" (the actual building).
- "City Council" (the governing board).
- "City" (the metropolis itself).
Ayuntamiento is often preceded by the word excelentÃsimo (English: "most excellent"). The phrase is often written Excmo. Ayto.
In the Catalan speaking parts of Spain, towns and cities generally use the Catalan cognate, Ajuntament. Ayuntamiento is mainly used in Spain; in Latin America AlcaldÃa (mayorship) is more current to describe municipal governing bodies.
