The station lies on the Canterbury East to Dover Priory line. It was built by the Southern Railway on 1 July 1928 to cater for the considerable increase in passenger traffic brought about by the development of the Kent coalfield. The main modern buildings are on the Up side of the station.
The typical off-peak service from the station is one train per hour to London Victoria via Chatham and Bromley South, and one train per hour to Dover Priory.
