[edit] Summary
A simplified depiction of an axonemal cross-section.
In this cartoon, outer-arm dyneins are shown with three heavy chains ("heads") and inner-arm dyneins are shown with two. Such is the case with organisms such as the genus Chlamydomonas. Other forms exist, such as the sea urchin sperm flagellum, in which both inner- and outer-arm dyneins have two heavy chains.
