[edit] Academics
ALHS has consistently had a strong academic record. Course offerings include many honors and AP courses. ALHS also consistently achieves "excellent" ratings on the Ohio State Report Card.[1]
[edit] Athletics
ALHS is the home of the Shoremen and Shoregals sports teams and participates in the Southwestern Conference. The school offers many sports programs including football, soccer, cross country, girls tennis and volleyball in the fall; basketball, ice hockey, swimming, and wrestling in the winter; and softball, baseball, track and field, and boys tennis in the Spring. Because of failed levies, the 2006-07 school year will be a "pay to participate" school year for sports and clubs.
[edit] Football
Avon Lake High School is very well known for its football program. In 2003, the Shoremen Football Team won the state Division II Football championship after beating Trenton Edgewood 10-7 to complete an undefeated season.
In 2004, after winning 29 straight games, including prior seasons, the Shoremen again reached the final championship game in Division II Football, but lost to Columbus Brookhaven 42-21.
In 2005, after winning 36 straight regular season games, the Shoremen missed a third consecutive trip to the state finals when they lost in the regional final to eventual D2 state champions Toledo Central Catholic 35-14. The Shoremen finished the 2005 season 12-1.
In 2006, the Shoremen's long string of regular season wins ended at Elyria, with the Pioneers winning 28-0, ending the streak at 38. That season, their string of nine straight SWC football titles was also snapped; the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Bees were the new conference champions.
[edit] Tennis
Avon Lake is also becoming a power in high school tennis. In 2006, the doubles team of Christine and Nikki Chiricosta won the Division I state championship. The team has also won four consecutive SWC titles and made it to the semifinals of the 2006 Coaches' Cup.

The other ensembles apart of the Avon Lake Choral Department are The Merples, a sixteen voice chamber ensemble auditioned from the Chorale; Da Cantari, a group of seventy-five auditioned under-classmen that participate in the Ohio Music Education Association in Class A, Men's Chorus, and Women's Chorus. Over 300 students are currently apart of the choral music program, as well as participating in other activities such as band, sports, and various clubs.
[edit] Band
