Autonym (botany)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In botanical nomenclature, an autonym is an automatically-created name.

Autonyms exist for names of subdivisions of genera (Art. 22) and for infraspecific taxa (Art. 26). The epithet of the former will be identical in spelling to the generic name (e.g. Euphorbia sect. Euphorbia) and the epithet of the latter will repeat the specific epithet (e.g. Festuca ovina subsp. ovina).

As an autonym is established automatically (without an author being involved) no author citation follows the name.
