Automotrice à grande vitesse

The AGV is an experimental successor to France’s TGV high-speed trains; the name stands for automotrice à grande vitesse , or ‘high-speed self-propelled carriage’. Investigations are being conducted to produce trains at the same costs as existing TGVs, with the same safety standards. Instead of having separate power cars at either end of the train, as do the current TGVs, the AGV’s motors would be located under the floors of passenger carriages, as is the case with most regular-speed multiple-unit trains and Germany’s third generation InterCity Express high-speed train. Space would be saved offering trains with up to 450 seats, while the targeted speed is 350 km/h.
