Automatic platform gates

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Automatic platform gates (TLA: APGs) or platform gate doors are gates at Railway platforms at the chest or waist height. These gates are designed to keep passengers from dropping off the platform. Like platform screen doors, the control of all gates are centralized. They will only be opened when the train stopped by the platform.

Comparing APG with platform screen doors, the gates are relatively cheaper to be built and installed: The gates do not require metallic framework to hold. Therefore, companies operating railways find such option a more afforable one to upgrade the safety of station platforms. And gates are suitable for the non-air-conditioned station since the design does not seal the whole platform from the "outside" (if the platform is covered at the height of the train's top), allowing normal air circulation. But the about half height of the platform screen doors renders APGs less effective against either suicide or illegal access to the tracks area.
