- 1984 - Western Australia becomes the last Australian state to abolish capital punishment for ordinary crimes (ie murder). New South Wales maintained it as a punishment for treason and piracy with violence until 1985.
- 1985 - John Howard replaces Andrew Peacock as federal Liberal leader & thus federal Leader of the Opposition.
- 1994 - Politician, John Newman is murdered outside his Cabramatta home.
