1809 - Lachlan Macquarie is officially appointed Governor of New South Wales, caretaker William Patterson governs until his appointment begins on Jaunary 1, 1810.
1882 - Planning begins on the Working Men's College in Melbourne (now RMIT University).
1948 - Margaret McIntyre becomes the first woman elected to the Parliament of Tasmania. She is killed in a plane crash later in the year.
