1838 - John Pascoe Fawkner founded The Melbourne Advertiser, the Port Phillip district's first newspaper.
1856 - The name Tasmania officially adopted to replace Van Diemen's Land which was felt to have too many convict connotations.
1856 - Convict William Buckley dies near Hobart, aged 75.
1866 - Alexander Thomson, mayor of Geelong on five occasions from 1850 - 1858, dies.
1900 - Street lights are installed in Adelaide.
1901 - With the Federation of Australia, the Commonwealth of Australia was born.
1901 - John Adrian Louis Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun is appointed as the first Governor-General of Australia.
1911 - The Australian Capital Territory is established through the Seat of Government (Administration) Act 1910.
