- 1838 - John Pascoe Fawkner founded The Melbourne Advertiser, the Port Phillip district's first newspaper.
- 1856 - The name Tasmania officially adopted to replace Van Diemen's Land which was felt to have too many convict connotations.
- 1856 - Convict William Buckley dies near Hobart, aged 75.
- 1866 - Alexander Thomson, mayor of Geelong on five occasions from 1850 - 1858, dies.
- 1900 - Street lights are installed in Adelaide.
- 1901 - With the Federation of Australia, the Commonwealth of Australia was born.
- 1901 - John Adrian Louis Hope, 7th Earl of Hopetoun is appointed as the first Governor-General of Australia.
- 1911 - The Australian Capital Territory is established through the Seat of Government (Administration) Act 1910.
- 1915 - Four people are shot dead and seven are wounded in The Battle of Broken Hill.
- 1934 - The Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory is established.
- 1983 - The Closer Economic Relations free trade agreement between Australia and New Zealand came into force.
- 2005 - The Australia-United States Free Trade Agreement commenced.
