• 1892 - Bert Hinkler, DSM, pioneer aviator is born in Bundaberg, Queensland.
• 1910 - Geelong, Victoria is declared a city.
• 1934 - Imperial Airways extends its airmail service to Australia.
• 1987 - Frank Vitkovic kills 8 and injures another 5 before falling to his death in the Queen Street massacre in Melbourne.
• 1988 - In Mabo v Queensland (1988) the High Court of Australia finds that the Queensland Coast Islands Declaratory Act, which attempted to retrospectively abolish native title rights, was not valid.
