• 1901 - the Immigration Restriction Act 1901 comes into force, instituting the White Australia Policy
• 1916 - In the Sinai desert, Australian and New Zealand mounted troops capture the Turkish garrison during the Battle of Magdhaba.
• 1929 - The 1929 Timber Workers strike results from a decision of Judge Lukin of the Arbitration Court to reduce the wages and increase the hours for 20,000 timber workers from a 44 hour week to 48 hour week.
• 1931 - Dame Nellie Melba dies.
• 1983 - Australia records its' first death from the HIV/AIDS virus.
