• 1794 - Acting Governor of New South Wales Lieutenant-Governor Francis Grose leaves New South Wales for England.
• 1927 - Batsman Bill Ponsford scores 437 for Victoria against Queensland at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
• 1967 - Prime Minister Harold Holt goes swimming at Cheviot Beach on Point Nepean, Victoria and is never seen again.
• 1980 - Two gunmen kill Turkish Consul-General Mehmet Baydar in Sydney, the killers were never apprehended.
