Map of the states of Australia as they were between 1901 and 1911. On January 1, 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was formed with these six states. On January 1, 1911, Northern Territory was split from South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory was created inside New South Wales, giving Australia the same layout it has today, except for a period between 1927 and 1931.
