[edit] Summary

Description

The map depicts the major expeditions to Australia between 1610 and 1640 AD, i.e. between (exclusively) the European discovery of Australia in 1606 AD by Willem Janszoon and his crew and the discovery of Tasmania by Abel Tasman and his crew in 1642 AD. All expeditions on the map were Dutch and are therefore coloured orange. The areas probably unknown to the Europeans in 1640 AD are shaded. Their borders and the tracks are only approximate. The name in quotation marks (Leeuwin) is, in contrast to the other ones, that of the ship not that of the captain or an other member of the crew.

Source

Own work; background map taken from Microsoft Encarta Weltatlas 2001. The track lines are based on a little imprecise secondary literature.
