[edit] Summary
Description |
The map depicts the first European expeditions reaching Australia, which took place in the first decade of the 17th century. As discoverer of Australia Willem Janszoon| with his crew are regarded, who documentedly on the Duyfken 1606 AD reached the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. However, Portugese or possibly even Spanish ships may have sighted the coasts of Australia before. For example, it has been supposed that a Portuguese expedition under the command of or with a Manuel (or Manoel) Godinho de Erédia (or Erida) had reached the 'Top End' already in 1601 AD. Portugese expeditions are coloured light green, Spanish yellow, and Dutch orange. The areas probably unknown to the Europeans in 1610 AD are shaded. Their borders and the tracks are only approximate.
