Australian cricket team in England in 1948
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Australian cricket team in England in 1948 became known as The Invincibles.
The team, captained by Don Bradman is notable as the first Test playing team to play an entire tour (32 matches including the 5 Tests) without losing a match. It was also 40 year old Bradman's farewell tour.
It is generally accepted that the English sides were more weakened by the effects of the Second World War than the Australians were. Even so, various commentators have rated the 1948 Australians as one of the best cricket teams ever and have placed it on a par with the 1902 Australian touring team, the West Indies team of the 1980s and the Australian team of the 1990s and 2000s.
The English team was captained by Norman Yardley.
The five Test, Ashes series was won convincingly:
- 1st Test (Trent Bridge) — Australia won by 8 wickets - [1]
- 2nd Test (Lord's) — Australia won by 409 runs - [2]
- 3rd Test (Old Trafford) — Drawn - [3]
- 4th Test (Headingley) — Australia won by 7 wickets - [4]
- 5th Test (The Oval) — Australia won by an innings and 149 runs - [5]
