The Australian Ranger Association (ARA) was formed in 1996. The first meeting held in Adelaide, South Australia. The name was changed in 2004 to the Australian Ranger Federation. This change was made to better reflect the role of the organisation and more closely affilate it with the International Ranger Federation. The description of Federation in the title was also considered to better represent the ideals of members.
